Ankle Sprain — a stretched or torn ankle ligament
A sudden twist or roll of the ankle — on the court, the trail, or an uneven curb — is one of the most common injuries we see in Montgomery County.
What it is
An ankle sprain is a stretch or tear of the ligaments that stabilize the ankle joint, usually from a sudden twist, fall, or awkward landing.
Severity ranges widely, from a mild stretch to a more complete tear, which is why an exam — and sometimes an X-ray — matters before assuming it's “just a sprain.”
Common symptoms
- Pain, swelling, and bruising around the ankle
- Tenderness to the touch
- Difficulty bearing weight or walking normally
How Dr. Feldman treats it
Initial care follows a rest-ice-compression-elevation approach, often with a brace or splint to limit motion while the ligaments heal, followed by a guided rehabilitation program to rebuild strength and stability.
For ankles that stay unstable after conservative treatment and rehab, Dr. Feldman offers surgical ligament repair or reconstruction.
