Flat Feet — a collapsed or low arch

Whether it's been lifelong or has developed gradually, a flattened arch changes the way weight moves through the foot with every step.

What it is

Flat feet describes a foot where the arch is low or has collapsed, so more of the sole makes contact with the ground. It can be present from childhood or develop later in life as the tendon that supports the arch weakens.

Not every flat foot causes pain — but for those that do, the pain often shows up along the inner ankle, arch, or lower leg.

Common symptoms

  • Pain or fatigue along the inner ankle or arch
  • Aching in the foot or leg after standing or walking
  • A visibly flattened arch, sometimes with the heel turning outward

How Dr. Feldman treats it

Dr. Feldman typically starts with supportive shoes, custom orthotics or bracing, and physical therapy to ease strain on the arch and supporting tendon.

Surgery is reserved for more advanced or structural cases that don't respond to conservative support, with the goal of restoring a more stable, functional arch.
