Hammertoe — a bent, claw-like toe
A toe that curls at the middle joint instead of lying flat can make ordinary shoes uncomfortable long before it becomes painful on its own.
What it is
A hammertoe is a deformity of one of the smaller toes, where the middle joint bends upward and the toe takes on a claw-like shape. Tight shoes, muscle imbalance, and arthritis are common contributors.
Early on, the toe is usually still flexible; over time it can stiffen into a fixed position.
Common symptoms
- A toe bent or curled at the middle joint
- Corns or calluses where the toe rubs against the shoe
- Pain, irritation, or swelling at the joint
How Dr. Feldman treats it
A flexible hammertoe often responds to roomier shoes, padding, and toe strapping to ease pressure and irritation.
When the toe has stiffened or conservative measures aren't enough, Dr. Feldman offers surgical correction to straighten the joint and relieve the irritation.
